Side Hustle Tax Check

About this checker

This tool gives a simplified estimate for UK side-hustle and online platform income. It applies the £1,000 trading allowance, flags likely platform reporting and Self Assessment, and estimates tax at your Income Tax band.

1. Personal items vs trading

Selling your own used possessions is normally tax-free. Trading — selling for profit or providing services — is taxable on profit over the allowance.

2. The £1,000 allowance and Self Assessment

Under £1,000 gross, there is nothing to report. Over £1,000 you register for Self Assessment and deduct the £1,000 allowance or your actual expenses, whichever is higher.

3. Platform reporting and the future threshold

Platforms report sellers with 30+ sales or £1,700+ a year to HMRC. The Self Assessment threshold is expected to rise to £3,000 by around 2029, with a simpler online service in between.

A free, independent educational tool for UK side-hustle and platform income (2026/27). It gives a simplified estimate and does not model National Insurance, other income, or the trading-vs-personal test in full. Not tax advice — check GOV.UK or an accountant.
